Phor was a shy boy who spent his time in his grandmother's basem*nt playing video games and creating battle raps. He signed a deal with Nike at the age of 20, but it came so quickly that he wasn't clear what he was getting himself into — and when it expired, he didn't renew it. It was only a short step from there to tattooing. On New Year's Eve 2008, he was in the Indiana basem*nt of his buddy Jet, who had his own tattoo equipment and still handles Phor's tattoos. Everyone around Phor encouraged him to pick up the needle.
Phor's rapping, on the other hand, is at the heart of his work. It's the main reason he stands out on 'Black Ink Crew: Chicago' - he's the cast's lone musician, and his songs are played on the series. He compares himself to Paul Wall, the showy Houston rapper known for his grill designs and chopped-and-screwed hip-hop. Phor operates independently of any record label (he's handled by Chicago hip-hop collective Private Stock), however, he claims to have spoken with big label executives who have requested him to give up his tattoo job to focus only on music.
