Like many drivers Nyck de Vries also began his racing career with karting. He started his professional racing career in 2004. He was signed to the McLaren Young Driver Programme from January 2010 until May 2019.

De Vries made his Formula One debut in September 2022 as a substitute for Williams at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix.
