Preparing for the Desert
In order to venture into the Great Desert, you’ll need some eye protection. Thankfully you can get some in Dehara City, at the house just west of the desert gate.
The Hiker inside will only give these to someone who has completed the Dehara Gym challenge – and since you have, he’ll hand over the Go-Goggles no problem.
When you go to leave for the desert, your Rival shows up and acts all tough as usual. However, Arthur arrives and wants to talk to you about Jax, who has been missing ever since the Ruins of Void.
Your Rival throws a tantrum at being ignored, and rushes off into the desert to get to Vivill Town.
We’ll need to follow him, because Arthur says Jax may be there as well.

There is a constant sandstorm raging here that will damage any battling Pokémon that isn’t Rock-, Steel-, or Ground-type.
With this in mind, it’s a good thing that the first trainer on the route is a Nurse, who will heal your team if you defeat her.
You may be coming back here periodically.
Head east into the sand when you’re ready.
On your way east, you’ll run into Roughneck Cameron, who is at the bottom of a sandpit.
Once he’s been taken care of, keep going.
Youngster Dave is roaming around near Cameron, and you’ll likely run into him on the way east.
When you see him, start turning south.
You will come up against a rocky bluff wall – follow it south, past Guitarist Nelson and his team of Electric Pokémon, and into a pass that leads into a small valley.
There are a couple of trainers in this valley, but the most interesting site here is in the southeast corner.
King Borrius the Third is buried here, and the tomb is currently being occupied by a couple of wannabe tomb-raiders.
There’s not much to do inside yet, but there is one item that is pretty important to pick up here.
Behind the pillar on the east side of the chamber is a Relic Copper – hold on to it, because you will get a lot of value out of it shortly.
Return to where Guitarist Nelson is and follow the rock wall north until you can see the tip of it.
Psychic Rode is here, and on the other side of the bluff tip is a passage leading into a thin canyon.
Bird Keepers Roger and Reed are waiting to give you a Double Battle as soon as you enter.
Once they’re done follow the canyon around and you’ll see a clown.
Break the rocks surrounding the clown and he will tell you that if you break all the rocks to the west and south of here, then he will be freed and give you a reward.
One important thing to note – smashing rocks in the Great Desert is encouraged, because there’s a small chance you’ll get a Fossil from it.
There are a lot of Fossils to collect, and all of them can be turned into Pokémon at Gurun Town.
If you manage to smash all the rocks the clown mentioned, the reward is TM37 Sandstorm, which is very appropriate.
When you leave the other entrance to the canyon, head north until you pass the eastern tip of the bluff.
Then head straight east until you see the coast.
There’s an old man here who is a member of the Undying Lucario cult, and he challenges you to fight 2000 Pokémon Battles to be inducted. That may take some time!
Your reward, if you make it that far, is a Lucarionite.
After speaking to him, head south.
You should see Collector Dawson in a large sandpit. Once you make it there, head east until you see a route sign sticking out of the sand.
This marks the end of the desert and the beginning of Gurun Town – which is a pit stop on the way to confronting the Light of Ruin at Vivill.

Gurun Town has a unique look to it, and apparently a lot of history behind it.
After healing your Pokémon at the Center, head north.
There are two houses here in the northwest part of town – head into the left house first.
The scientist in this house can revive any Fossils you may have found from the Great Desert, so you may be coming back here quite often.
After you’re done here, go next door.
The Black Belt in this house will buy any Relic items you have, including the Relic Copper you got from the Tomb of Borrius.
The other man in the room wants 20 Hard Stones – if you manage to collect that many, he’ll give you TM111 Smack Down.
The house across the road to the east from the two you’ve already been to contains a Fisherman, and he wants to know if you’ve caught at least 3 Pokémon from fishing.
If you have, the Fisherman will hurriedly rush off to East Borrius and leave behind a Pearl.
If you visit the Poke Mart, you can speak to a woman inside and she’ll give you a free Lemonade. Lots of goodies to get here!
And then northwest of town is the local entrance of the KBT Expressway.
KBT Expressway – Gurun Section
The section of the expressway around Gurun Town, Antisis City and Dehara City has its own set of Pokémon to catch, so it might be worth venturing inside to check it out.

Moving Forward
Your next destination is Vivill Town, which is on the other side of Vivill Woods.
The entrance to the woods is on the north side of Gurun Town, up a set of stairs. So that’s where we’ll be heading next.
